The World Teachers Day is a day set aside by the United Nations to draw awareness to the importance of teaching, the challenges teachers face and how to improve teaching. This year the theme was "the right to education means a right to a qualified teacher". It is clear that there are shortage of teachers in our classrooms but that does not mean unqualified teachers should be let in to cover the gap.
Teachers need to be qualified to deliver the best education to our students. For this to be successfully achieved, teachers need to be trained, encouraged and motivated to improve on their teaching skills as well as develop themselves to meet international standards so their pupils can compete on the world stage. This is one of the reasons behind the annual IDEETeacherPrize under the umbrella of The Teachers Apprenticeship Program (TAP). The Teachers Apprenticeship Program (TAP) has been in existence for over 5 years and since its inception we have a total of 15 apprentices that has gone through the program. Some of the trainees have gone up to further their education dreams in government recognised institutions.
An essay question on "how to improve teaching skills in Nigeria" and two lesson notes on "how to improve Financial Literacy in Kids" and "how to improve problem solving skills in students" was sent out as part of requirement for participation. The essay and lesson note question were sent to schools, social media platforms and school governing boards to share to the various schools in the FCT for their participation. A total of twenty-seven (27) entries stood out as the best and after the process of screening, evaluation and interview, a top five (5) emerged where the top three (3) were eventually selected for our prizes. The remaining seven (7) best received consolation prizes while others received their certificate of participation. On the day of the awards, the program was divided into two (2) sessions with the first session being a training session where the topic was on "Improving Problem solving and critical thinking in children". This was an engaging session that ended with the participants brainstorming and coming up with ideas on how they will improve problem solving and critical thinking in their classrooms.
This was followed by group formation where teachers were shared into two groups with a question for each group on "How to apply problem solving skills" and "how to engage their students in critical thinking". Each group made a presentation about their ideas on the topic given to them. It was a very engaging session with both groups learning from one another.
