Brief Report of the World Teachers Day 2019 Teacher Prize Event
Initiative for Education & Development (IDEE) is a Non-Governmental Organization implementing social development programmes to support poverty reduction, sustainable livelihoods and human capacity development with project offices in Abuja, Abeokuta & Damaturu.
IDEETeacherPrize ia aimed at motivating teachers and influencing teacher development started in 2017. To mark the 2019 World Teachers Day, Initiative for Education and Development organized a competition where teachers were expected to send in an essay and lesson note on three categories.
During the program there was a speech by the guest speaker on the theme "Young Teacher: the future of the profession". Here he talked about the need to encourage, support and influence young people into the teaching profession, the issue of welfare and incentive is critical to motivating young people to see teaching as a career as well as have a policy change concerning the programs at the colleges of education and education faculties.
Panelist from different educational sectors were also on ground to talk about the various needs of teachers and the character, skills and behaviours needed to be an exceptional teacher.
After a competitive assessment and elimination process, Three winners emerged in the following categories:
(1) Best Teacher in the FCT
2) Best Female Science Teacher in the FCT
3) Best Teacher Living with Disability & teaching children Living with Disability in the FCT
Seventy-eight (78) participants attend the 2019 event in Abuja on 5th October 2019
We appreciate the efforts of our policy makers from Secondary Education Board, Universal Basic Education Board, guest speaker, panelist, teachers, parents, media organizations, other organizations, our staff, friends and colleagues for participating in IDEETeacherPrize2019.
We look forward to using the points highlighted during the event in influencing and advocating for improved teachers development in Nigeria.
